how do install a 220v outlet?
i am looking into buying a new welder. it operates on 220v. i will be running this in my gargage outside, the only problem is that my breaker box is full. i was thinking about tapping into the washing machine line because its also a 220v, but i would much rather run a seperate line just for my garage. what do you guys think i should do?? thanks.
Are you sure your washing machine is 220V? The dryer is most likely 220V but I have doubt about the washer. Tapping off it either way is a poor idea because a welder is going to draw a lot of amps. Depending on your panel you could install tandem breakers allowing you to free up enough space to put a two pole breaker in. You are going to need fairly heavy gauge wire depending on the welder’s draw and distance from the panel. Also, depending on the age and location of your outside meterbase you may be able to put a breaker in there and run a sub feed for the welder. If all else fails just call an electrician.
